i hate wind / i love helicopters

no ride today… which is really a shame considering the record-setting temp (66˚), but i'd rather ride in pouring rain than these house-rattling gusts. we seem to get it worse, nestled here against the foothillls in golden. i've always had a gripe against the wind, as the hobbies of my youth (outdoor volleyball and frisbee) were also stymied by its bellows.

thankfully the day wasn't a total loss, as i finally got to meet jeff warner, pilot extraordinaire and fellow MTB'er (so yes, there is a tie-in for a bike-related blog). ever since i found out he flew for Flight For Life, we've been trying to find a time for me to come down and check out that big orange beast firsthand. see, i'm something of a helicopter aficionado. i won't bore you w/ the details, 'cept to say that when i was a boy the FFL seemed to land in our cul-de-sac more often than it should've (elderly neighbor w/ bad heart, RIP), and i was immediately enthralled. since those days i guess you could say i've been obsessed (see, another tie-in). when we lived in NYC i used to regularly stop by the westside heliport on my training rides from brooklyn to jersey. quite the thrill seeing these massive metal contraptions gracefully defy gravity when they lift-off or gently touch down. in fact, i'll share a secret– my life goal is to learn to fly one. it ain't cheap, so it won't be happening in the immediate future, but meeting jeff today and seeing this bird up close (w/o being a patient) has re-ignited the fire. guess it's time to make my first million (and i thought bikes were expen$ive). ;-)

(apologies in advance to hillary, should she break into a cold sweat upon seeing this:)
