whiskey & gummy bears

black hearts cyclocross rally; thumbs up from a rigid mtn bike participant.

due to accumulated snow, the course was re-routed such that we basically rode from green mtn trailhead down to bear creek lake park. there we rode some of mt. carbon loop, then on to red rocks cyclery for the last check-in, and back up the path along C470 to rooney road. i had a really fun time– so much so that i'm reconsidering my recent thoughts about swapping out the rigid fork. decisions decisions.

anyway, back to today. even though temps were only in the 20's, it wasn't bad at all *except* for the stretch along 470; on the way down i thought my fingertips were gonna freeze solid, and on the way back we had massive head winds/gusts which resulted in freezing snow being sandblasted against your face. thankfully some kind souls brought flasks of whiskey which really did help warm up the body if not the mind. yep it was that cold... in fact, i had to piss on my front derailleur at one point to thaw it out so i could use it. ;-)

best of all, i won a pretty cool commuter light set by planet bike. the event had four checkpoints where playing cards were drawn at random. after all was said and done, jamie (the organizer) talleyed up the score, based on some formula to make it fair & random. i got first place. more importantly, i felt really strong today, especially considering i haven't been on the bike lately. choice of cold-weather attire seemed to work pretty well too, except for my cheapo performance winter gloves. need something warmer (even w/ liners). all in all a fun day. riding in snow is hard work.
