took a demo bike (thanks adam)—niner rip 9—out in the mist on a cool day for some MW/RR/DR action. great ride, while it lasted... though i was assured the bike was running tubes (ahem), when i flatted on top of DR and pulled half the tire away from the rim: no tube. and my little crank bros pump was not gonna reseal the bead. pulled the valve stem and tried running a tube (thought this was an option??) but tire was flat in about 10 feet. second guessed that maybe the tube was bad (i repair/recycle), and a couple of guys stopped to help and offered another tube. not 5 minutes later flat again. arrrgh.
had to walk it out, down the hogback, back to lower red rocks... i was pleasantly surprised that, in addition to the two guys who helped me on trail, someone stopped to ask if i needed a tube, and then a bit later, an older couple (cyclists w/ rack) pulled over and insisted they give me a ride back to the jeep ("there are whackos out there who might try to hit you on purpose").
good ride while it lasted. hope to get the tire fixed in the morning and off to buff creek tomorrow to give this bike a better workout.
